How Does a Kickstarter work?

We often talk about our plans for a Kickstarter campaign, but how does something like that actually work, and why do we keep talking about it while nothing is live yet? We’ll answer these questions in this post.

At any given moment, Kickstarter has around 400 live board game projects looking for funding. That means if you go to kickstarter.com, you’ll only see the games they put at the top. How do you get to the top of the page? By being successful. But didn’t you go to Kickstarter to become successful? Exactly…

The crowdfunding website’s problem is its own success. The crowd can’t find you because of the huge supply.

So to stand out within all this supply, you need to bring your own crowd along via an email list: you let everyone know you’re going live soon, and when you do go live, everyone backs you right away. This way the project “funds” as quickly as possible, Kickstarter’s algorithm sees that it’s an attractive project, you rise to the top of the page, and other people can find it. Hopefully that attracts even more people. That’s why we’re trying to build as large an email list as possible. The bigger the list, the bigger the chance we get funded immediately, drawing attention for more backers.
